Driving Tests

The Theory Test

The Theory Test is a computerised test consisting of 50 multiple-choice questions (from a bank of about 1000) about the theory of driving, first aid, driving attitude, rules of the road, driving laws and the Highway Code. It is followed by a video-based hazard perception test, which is designed to test your ability to observe potential hazards both on and around the road. There are 14 video clips and 15 scoring hazards (one clips has 2 scoring hazards). You must have passed the Theory Test before you can take the practical part of your driving test. However, as long as you have a provisional license you can begin learning to drive on the roads before taking the Theory Test. Contact Freedom Driving Training School Derby to book your first lesson. You'll need to be aware of, and able to apply the theory at all times when you're driving.

Free Theory Test tuition is available at Freedom Driver training as part of your training course with the school.

As soon as you feel ready discuss booking your theory test with your Freedom Driving Training School Instructor. You can book your theory test online or by calling 0300 200 1122.

Remember - you must take both parts of your driving license (the plastic card and the green paper counterpart page) to your driving theory test. Also take your appointment letter.

The Practical Driving Test
Image 1

This is usually the most demanding part of he driving test, where your examiner will test your competence and ability, and make sure you're capable of driving alone, safely and responsibly. The test is about 45 minutes long and follows the DSA set up.

(Opposite Lisa passes her driving test at the first attempt after lessons with Chris)

1. Firstly your eyesight will be tested (if you need glasses ensure you take them with you!)
2. Then you will be asked two questions on safety/car maintenance (see show me tell me section of this website)
3. Then you drive around a predetermined route for approximately 35 to 40 minutes (Freedom Driving Instructors know these routes like the back of their hands having been present at numerous practical tests).

The examiner will give you directions along the driving test route which will comprise a variety of different types of roads that may include country roads, dual carriageways, busy high streets or town centre roads.

As part of the practical test you will be asked to carry out two manoeuvres from:

a) The Bay Park (normally at the test centre)
b) Turn in the road (3 point turn!)
c) Reversing Around a Corner/Into a junction
d) The Parallel Park

Don't worry you will have been well trained in all these manoeuvres by your Freedom Driving Instructor at the school before the test.

You may also be asked to carry out the controlled (Emergency) stop.

If you wish, your Freedom Driving Instructor can sit in the back of the car on your test.

The examiner will make notes of any driving faults that you make. These are split into three categories - Minor, Serious and Dangerous.

Minor - you can have no more than 15 of these, and none that happen repeatedly, or you will fail.
Serious - you mustn't get any of these, or it's an automatic fail
Dangerous - the worst of the three! You mustn't get any of these, or it's an automatic fail.

When you've finished the test, the examiner will tell you whether you've passed or failed, and will give you (and your instructor if you like) feedback on your driving. Whether you've passed or not, it's really important to listen to the feedback, and apply it to your future driving - DSA examiners really know what they're talking about when it comes to driving and their feedback is extremely valuable.

Your Freedom Driving Instructor will help you decide when you are ready to take your practical test and can book it for you if you wish. If you want to book it - discuss dates with your instructor first and then ring 0300 200 1122 or book online at
